This aromatic evergreen is a memeber of the redwood family and grows in Hawaii to around 80 feet in heigth and 1 1/2 feet in diameter. Frequently called "Japanese cedar" sugi is the national tree of Japan used in oranamentals and found around temples. The wood is a soft, lightweight wood that is easily worked and durable. The sapwood is white to yellowish, and the heartwood reddish brown. Because of its aroma, sugi is fequently used in jewelry boxes, drawers and other furniture pieces.
Sugi Pine is stocked in 4/4 and 8/4 thickness and retails for $4.25 a board foot.
